Conceive, Believe, Achieve

October 12, 2015 Thoughts

There is a famous quote by Napoleon Hill, writer of the book “Think and Grow Rich” which states:  “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, you can achieve.   Today I am going to break that quote down to why some think it’s a load of bull and others swear by it.   We are all living it anyway.

At some point in our life we have all conceived and believed that we are going to have lots of bills.  We can see where money might be a bit short, and we believe that we have to work long and hard to hopefully enjoy a retirement one day.  So we live the quote.  We are not so sure that it works the other way!

Whatever the mind can CONCEIVE:   Do you know what you want in life?  Can you picture the perfect life you want to have?  If you asked 10 of your friends what they wanted in life, 9 out of 10 will tell you all the things they don’t want.  They do not have a clear picture of what it is they do want.  They are unable to see a view of life that does not include some of the things they don’t want anymore.  The first part is to get an extremely clear, focused, detailed description of what it is you DO want in life.  You have to be able to describe it in living, breathing detail.  This is to conceive what you do want.

And BELIEVE:  If you can say I want such and such BUT,  then there is the belief problem.  Believing that you can have what you conceive is knowing that there is a way to achieve it.  Believing that it is not just a possibility but also a probability.  If all you can see is the problems of achieving your ultimate goal then you are not focusing on the achieving of it, you are not focusing on the solutions, only on the problems.  You are listening to the ego telling you all the reasons why it won’t work, it isn’t a good idea, it will take too long, you are not capable or worthy of having it.  The ego is the part of our brain that developed for our protection, and it has it’s uses if you are faced with a real physical problem like a wild dog attacking you, it is of no use when we are considering where we truly want to go in life, because that is about taking rational and helpful risks.  When the ego pipes up, the best thing to say is thank you for your input, today I am moving towards the life I want to have.  I know that I can do it.

You can ACHIEVE:  One of the main arguments against books like “The Secret” is that all the visualization and believing you can have something, will not work if you don’t do something.  Your dream life will not suddenly appear fully formed in your lap.  There has been the same argument against this quote, and yet the last part implies your work.  It doesn’t come fully formed, it is about what you achieve.  You take action and work towards your dream life, seeing the end clearly in mind and believing that you can and will achieve it.  You won’t achieve it if you allow the ego’s doubts to have the main say, therefore staying in the job you hate, or the relationship that is abusive, because you rely on that safety, allowing fear of the unknown to stop you from starting forward on a better life, the life you truly want today.
