Have You Ever Wondered If a Long Journey is Going To End?

September 30, 2015 Thoughts

AreWeThereYet2-JulyAug2003There is a famous quote by Lao Tzu that goes “A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.”  For any change to occur to get us from where we are now to where we want to be, we need to take that first step.  Once that decision is made the next few steps can go by in a hurry as we learn new things, see a changing scenery and enjoy new beginnings.

Like any long journey or marathon there is the middle part of the journey that seems like a never ending hard slog.  This is when one foot is still moving in front of the other but we are starting to wonder if we are ever going to get there.  It reminds me of travelling with small kids, when they start to ask the question, “Are we there yet?”

This is the time when it becomes hard to stay the course.  It is still too far from the end goal to be absolutely assured of reaching the finish line, and yet the still small voice can quietly urge us on, don’t give up,  you are over half-way, the distance you have to go is now smaller than the distance you have already travelled.

There are 3 things we can keep in mind that help us to stay with it, and never give up during this time.

1.  Be inspired by others who have gone before.  As Anthony Robbins says, “We over-estimate what we can do in one year, and under-estimate what we can achieve in ten years.”  Every one who has achieved success has made it through those first few hard years.

2.  Be very clear on your purpose, your “WHY” you are on this journey in the first place.  If it is a weight loss goal, a financial goal or a desire for a totally fulfilled life, your why needs to be bigger than the obstacles you will encounter.

3.  Be Kind to yourself.   Driving yourself into the ground trying to accomplish what may take a year or more to achieve into a couple of months can make it hard to keep going.  Be kind in the thoughts you think, be kind to your body with good food and enough sleep and be kind to yourself by allowing time for respite and relaxation.  The road is still there in front of you, it isn’t going to suddenly disappear.

I hope this post proves useful as you continue on your journey, whatever it may be.  Having a coach can help you stay the course.  For more information please leave a comment,  or email me at maryanne@beingyourthoughts.com.au  or ring me on 0418247775.
