Are You Waiting For Happiness? 3 Ways to Be Happy Today

September 5, 2016 Thoughts

happinessDo you ever think, I will be happy when I get a raise or win a promotion.  I will be happy when I meet the man/woman of my dreams or thinking of how happy you will be when finally everything is right.

All of these things point to you expecting your happiness to come from external sources.  You are allowing outside circumstances and people to control your life and how happy you can be.  The happiness derived from external things is always of a fleeting nature.  You win lotto – yeah big happiness, until you find that you had 50 relatives you had never even heard of and the charities have some how got hold of your phone number.  Having a lot of extra money only amplifies how you are now.  If you were a happy person already you will be happier.  If you were a cynical, negative person you will be even more cynical and negative.

Being happy is a state of mind, a state of being that you can choose every single day.  Here are my top 3 ways to be happy today!

  1. happinessGratitude.  Find at least 3 things that you can be grateful for every single day.  Every one has something that they can be grateful for.  If you wake up, are able to get out of bed then you have a chance of today being a good day.  Be grateful that you get that chance.  Be grateful for the people in your life.  Be grateful for pets, a roof over your head, the clothes on your back.  You cannot be truly grateful and appreciative and be depressed at the same time.  It may take some conscious awareness to think about the things you are grateful for but the more you make gratitude a part of your day, the happier you will be.
  2. Take time to laugh.  It may only be 15 to 20 minutes but find something to laugh about.  With the internet it is easy to find funny video clips that will give you a good laugh.  Laughter releases all the feel good hormones into your brain.  It boosts your immune system and helps the body to heal itself.  Laughter really is the best medicine.  If you are able to anchor the memory or feeling of something that you find really funny you can go back over it time and again in your mind to carry the laughter affect right through your day.
  3. Be aware.  If you find yourself using the words “I will be happy when”  stop yourself and say “I choose to be happy now!”  Happiness is ultimately a choice we make for ourselves everyday.  Choosing to be happy, to think I am a happy person, leads your mind to find things that enhances those happy feelings.  The external things are not what makes you happy.  Choosing to be happy first means that you notice things that please you, that make you happier throughout the day rather than focusing on all the things that could be wrong.

Don’t wait for happiness.  It is like waiting to live.  The only time you have is right now.  Being grateful, having a laugh and choosing to think of yourself as a happy person makes life pleasant, relaxed and full of potential.  Isn’t that worth being happy for.
